[Interview]: FMCA Roadtrek Chapter President Sherry Targum Q&A with Sunshine State RVs

The Roadtrek Chapter of the Family Motor Coach Association has been friends of Sunshine State RVs for quite a while. We’ve had the pleasure of working with countless members of their organization and have assisted them with purchasing newer Roadtrek Class B RVs.

Recently, we had the chance to take a moment and sit down with Roadtrek Chapter President Sherry Targum, and get a better idea of what the benefits of being a member of Roadtrek Chapter are, what kind of expectations you might have as a member, and what she plans on focusing on in her leadership role moving forward.

Sunshine State RVs:
Thank you so much for taking the time to speak with us today. I’ve read your letter from the President, and I see the benefits of membership with Roadtrek listed, but what could I tell someone who just purchased a Roadtrek from Sunshine State RVs that the President told me she likes about being a member of Roadtrek Chapter most? What has your membership personally enhanced for you as a Roadtrek owner?

Sherry:
In a word, camaraderie. That’s the best thing about being a member of Roadtrek Chapter, but to be clear, in order to be a member of Roadtrek Chapter, you must be a member of the Family Motor Coaches Association. Their benefits are worth membership by themselves, especially the evacuation insurance they provide. If you’re ever stranded or something happens to you on the road, FMCA evacuation insurance will take care of getting you where you need to be and this coverage is included in their basic membership. I would also say that the education we receive with membership of Roadtrek Chapter is another great benefit. The shared experiences with other members and the things that we all learn while out on the road is perhaps the best information we can get as Roadtrek owners; sometimes better than speaking with a technician!

Sunshine State RVs:
What’s your most popular rally every year? What makes it so great?

Sherry:
Every event is fun, however, I would say that the Chapter Rally is my favorite. It’s one of the biggest rally’s of the year.  This past September, we had at least 100 rigs and we all met up and went to Nashville. It was a wonderful time spent with members, with lots of food and drinks and just everyone having so much fun. It’s a great chance for us to learn from each other’s experiences out on the road and just have a great time with so many people.

Sunshine State RVs:
Do you notice more membership in the South or the North? Is there a specific geographical area you see the most members from?

Sherry:
There isn’t really a specific area. We have members from all over. The state of Florida and California have the most membership but that’s mainly only because of the size of the two states. The Chapter is divided into 9 regions, with Florida having their own region, and membership is pretty evenly spread throughout all the regions.

Sunshine State RVs:
What are some of the plans you have for the chapter under your leadership? Where do you see the chapter growing in the coming years?

Sherry:
Membership growth is a top priority for me. I want all of our members to have a great time at all of our events, keeping things simple for members so that they can just focus on having fun with one another and getting the most out of their membership. The FMCA president message is very similar to this as well, to just have fun and enjoy each other, and that’s what I want for our Chapter too.

Sunshine State RVs:
Have you noticed younger demographics of Roadtrek owners? Is this something you all anticipate having to incorporate more of in the near future?

Sherry:
The FMCA is focused on getting younger demographics interested in membership as they start to enter ownership of their motorhomes. Same goes with our Roadtrek Chapter. We want to make sure that what we have worked so hard to build with this chapter continues to grow and get better, and making sure the younger demographics are included is a big part of accomplishing that. We plan on making our newsletter available for non-members now, which is a BIG change for us, all in the hopes of getting more people engaged with our Roadtrek Chapter and keeping them informed on what’s going on with us and how they too can participate.

Some other great points that Sherry made throughout our chat were that some problems she and other members have faced is the expense of the unit, but says the advantages of owning a Roadtrek more than make up for it. Being able to go anywhere and park anywhere seems to be one of the highlights of owning a Roadtrek for Sherry. “We have our hotel with us!” she said, adding “it’s always a running joke amongst us that when you go to visit people, you park in their driveway, but don’t sleep in their house!”

Many thanks to Sherry for taking the time to speak with us, as well as to the Roadtrek Chapter for their fantastic relationship with Sunshine State RVs.
